Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
158 AM PST Fri Jan 17 2025
.SYNOPSIS...A dry cold front approaching from the north will bring
cooler temperatures to Northern Nevada this afternoon. The front
will exit the region to the south later this evening, leaving
much colder air across most of Northern and Central Nevada through
the weekend. Overnight low temperatures will drop into the teens
to single digits each night through at least Monday night.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. Recent weak high pressure
across Northern Nevada gives way to a cooler northerly flow aloft
today as broad trough energy drops south out of British Columbia
and through the Pacific NW. Winds will transition from light and
variable this morning to northerly this afternoon and evening in
the wake of a dry cold frontal passage. Jet energy clipping
northern and eastern NV later today and into Saturday will result
in increased winds with gusts of 15 to 25 mph over much of the
higher terrain and some valley locations, with strongest gusts
expected across the mountains of Elko County. The cooler
continental air reaches northern portions of the CWA this
afternoon, with high temperatures trending lower. While areas near
and south of the I-80 corridor will generally only cool by a
couple to a few degrees from highs Thursday, highs across Northern
Elko County will be reduced by 10 or more degrees today with mid
20s to low 30s. Much cooler tonight with lows dropping into the
teens and single digits for most locations, with the coldest
conditions across Elko County. POPs increase into the 5 to 10
percent range across mainly just the mountains of northern and
east-central NV with the passage of the cold front later this
evening into Saturday, however not expecting any measurable
precipitation. The cool northerly flow continues across northern
and east-central NV through the short-term period resulting in
below normal temperatures. Temperatures across most of Southern
Lander and Southern Eureka Counties, as well as Northern Nye
County will not be significantly impacted by the clipping
northerly flow, with high temperatures at Tonopah expected to
remain near or slightly above normal.
.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday
A ridge-trough pattern over the CONUS bisects the country late
this weekend. The ridge to the west keeps the West Coast and Great
Basin cool and dry while a long wave trough amplifying from
eastern Canada allows arctic air to infiltrate the eastern two-
thirds of the CONUS. This pattern persists through most of the
next week as surface shortwaves ride the ridged north-northwest
flow through the state Monday and Tuesday evening.
The first shortwave combined with another shortwave that passed
through the region early in the weekend will bring a reinforcing
shot of cold air to the area (especially northeastern NV) and
combined with gusty winds during frontal passage will create
bitter cold overnight conditions. Latest model forecasts
anticipate overnight lows in the single digits both Sunday night
and Monday nights with a potential for negative temperatures in
northeastern NV Monday night behind the cold front. This passage
will be another dry affair as the atmosphere overhead continues to
be moisture starved with PW values struggling to get above 0.15
inches Sunday night and Monday.
The ridge relaxes and flow aloft takes on a westerly component
Tuesday. While another surface based shortwave drags another dry
frontal boundary across the region by Wednesday morning,
temperature impacts will be minimal with lows only into the teens
and 20s and highs in the 30s for the latter stages of the week. By
Friday zonal flow aloft will push its way down into the Great
Basin as the high pressure system to the west finally yields its
Pacific and begins to trek to the east-southeast bringing a
potential change in weather pattern to the southwest CONUS by next
weekend.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR conditions across the terminals through the day
Friday with a weak cold front dropping southward across the Silver
State. This will bring few to scattered high clouds through the
late morning and afternoon. Light and variable winds tonight will
increase to 4-8 kt from the SW before shifting NNW as the front
drops from north to south from 18-00Z. A few gusts to 24 kt
possible at TPH and ELY (25% chance).
&&
.LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...None.
